MABLSA Committees

PROGRAMMING

Our Programming Committee leads initiatives from August through March, curating events that enrich our members’ academic, professional, and community experiences. Our focus areas include academic affairs, career and professional development, education and community engagement, advocacy, pre-law affairs, and conventions and competitions.

Each program is designed with our members in mind, with signature offerings such as our Annual Leadership Retreat, Job Fairs, Pre-Law Symposiums, and Convention. These cornerstone events not only foster growth and connection but also empower our members to excel in their academic journeys, professional careers, and future leadership roles.

CONVENTION

The Convention Committee is responsible for planning and executing MABLSA’s Annual Regional Convention, our premier event held each February–March. The committee oversees every aspect of the convention experience—from advocacy competitions and the career fair to the Pre-Law Symposium, panels, and the Legacy Gala & Awards Banquet.

Working closely with our sponsors, alumni, and chapters across the Mid-Atlantic, the Convention Committee ensures that the event provides unmatched opportunities for professional development, networking, advocacy, and community building. Their efforts create a space where law students, attorneys, judges, and leaders can connect, compete, and celebrate Black excellence in the legal profession.

ANNUAL LEADERSHIP RETREAT

The Leadership Retreat Committee organizes MABLSA’s Annual Leadership Retreat, a cornerstone program designed to equip chapter leaders and members with the tools to excel both in law school and beyond.
The retreat features chapter finance training, academic accountability workshops, strategies for strengthening chapter presence on campus, professional conduct training, and organizational best practices. In addition, participants engage in a mental health check-in, hear from distinguished guest speakers, and gain insight from a professionals highlighting excellence and resilience in the legal community.
Through this retreat, the committee fosters academic success, professional growth, and empowered leadership, ensuring our chapters remain strong, visible, and impactful across the region.

CBC WEEK

The CBC Week Committee leads MABLSA’s participation in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference, one of the most significant gatherings of Black leaders, policymakers, and professionals in the nation’s capital.

The committee organizes opportunities for our members to engage in policy discussions, attend panels and networking events, and connect with legislators, attorneys, and community leaders who are shaping today’s most pressing issues. By coordinating programming and ensuring strong member involvement, the CBC Week Committee empowers students to bridge the gap between legal education and public policy while amplifying the voice of future Black attorneys in national conversations.

MID-ATLANTIC JOURNAL ON RACE & POLICY

The Mid-Atlantic Journal on Race and Policy Committee curates MABLSA’s premier legal publication, showcasing scholarship at the intersection of race, law, and public policy. The committee works with students, professors, and practitioners to publish articles that amplify diverse perspectives and engage with the critical issues shaping our communities.

In addition to editing and publishing the Journal, the committee also supports the Mid-Atlantic Journal Symposium, which brings together authors, attorneys, and policymakers for thought-provoking dialogue and professional development. Through this work, the committee ensures that MABLSA remains at the forefront of scholarly research, advocacy, and policy impact across the region.
